You are Valued!

"TAKE NOTHING FOR THE JOURNEY, NEITHER WALKING STICK, NOR SACK, NOR FOOD, NOR MONEY, AND LET NO ONE TAKE A SECOND TUNIC." (Lk.9:1-6)

"If found, please return."

This is what people write to their valuables to remind those who may have found them to return to the rightful owner. So that, the owner can have them back again.

Sin makes one lost.

When the chosen people of God sinned, they were lost. They had lost everything, even their temple which was a symbol of their identity as a nation and which shaped their dignity as God's chosen people.

Ezra described the painful path of their being lost. They were exiled as a result of their sin. "For our wicked deeds we have been delivered up, we and our kings and our priests, to the will of the kings of foreign lands, to the sword, to captivity, to pillage, and to disgrace..." (Ezr.9:5-9).

However, God found them and brought them back to Jerusalem and Judah. God also had given them the privilege of building the temple. To this Ezra, offered his prayer of gratitude in spite of the great guilt of the nations' sin. God did not abandon them but had shown mercy.

The grateful prayer of Ezra echoed in the Psalm, "Blessed be God, who lives for ever" (Tb 13:2,3-4a,4befghn,7-8).

When Jesus sent the Twelve to spread the good news, he reminded them to trust in God's providence.

"Take nothing..." This was his command. In this way, they will never get lost in their mission. They had to take nothing because God will give them everything. God will not abandon them, especially in their need. This was how God valued them.

Sin looses our identity and lessens our dignity. It reduces us to nothingness and will leave us with nothing. But God's mercy will find us.

If only God can write the words "If found, please return" on our foreheads, surely he would do just to prove that we are valued.
