WHAT DO YOU STRIVE FOR?

What do you strive for? As human beings, we are all yearning for something. Our whole lives, we dedicate to the object/s of our striving, but how many of us have ever felt truly fulfilled by what we yearn for?

We human beings tend to enslave ourselves with the obsession of possession. Materialism is a temptation most of us fall victim to. As humans, we are grounded to the material/physical world because we are a part of it. Because of our bodies, our attachment to it is undeniable. Our very nature demands for material needs, like nourishment and shelter. However, this attachment to materiality could trap us into greed, which leads us astray from the will of God. Thus, we must remember that falling into the cycle of possession obsession is fruitless, because these earthly accumulations do not actually matter. "For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out." (1 Tim. 6:7). Chasing greed is a futile destiny because when we reach the end of our days, we do not carry our earthly possessions with us. So what, then. Do we carry with us?

Human beings are not only bodies; not wholly material. We are embodied spirits, and this spirit is the only thing we take with us when we die. This is why we should not waste our focusing on worldly possessions. Although there is a thread that binds us to materiality, there is also a spirit inside us which allows us to transcend over earthly or worldly things. We must not only listen to our bodily needs and wants, but to our spiritual yearning as well --our yearning to belong, to be loved, and to be happy. What we yearn for is that perfect feeling of acceptance, love, and understanding. This is what we seek in every aspect of our lives, like in our relationships, work, and social experiences. However, this can never be found in the amount of things we possess, nor the amount of relationships we have. The reason why most of never feel satisfied with whatever we find is because we are looking in all the wrong places. Aside from material objects, we look to satisfy our desires through friendships, romantic relationships, and social experiences, without realizing that we are imperfect beings to perfectly satisfy our expectations. This is why we become discontent when our relationships fail or do not reach our expectations. We do not realize that what we are searching for deep down is God.

God gives us that perfect love. He is our Father, who loves us not based on what we have or do, but because we are His children. Despite our sins, He loves us; despite our faults, He cares for us. Even when we turn away, He does not want to punish us—He wants us to be one with Him in Heaven, and to fulfill His promise of eternal salvation. Because of this love, He gave us His only son, Jesus Christ, so that through Him we could be cleansed from sin and be saved. He sent Jesus to redeem us so that we may have a chance to be with Him once again. What human action can ever compare to God's ultimate profession of love through Jesus' sacrifice?

When Jesus took up human form, He showed us how to live life according to the will of God. He lived simply and humbly, helping those He could, and loving those that society could not. He taught us to be kind to one another, and to give special attention to the poor and the sick. He has taught us to love one another, and to be generous. He has taught us to honor our parents, our neighbors, and our dignities.

He has taught us to find joy in simplicity and that true treasure awaits in Heaven if we live our lives humbly. He said, "If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." (Mt. 19:21). He has taught us everything we ought to know, and has shown us how to be everything we ought to be as Christians. Without His guidance or example, we would be lost. We would be led astray from the Word. On the cross, He died for our sins so that we could be saved. Thus, we are redeemed through Him.

This is what we yearn for— not material objects nor temporary and imperfect relationships, but redemption. We yearn for salvation with God, because we yearn for that perfect love. Therefore, Jesus has given us that which we yearn for. Through Him, we have everything we could ever want and hope for. He has redeemed us not only through His sacrifice, but through His way of life as well. Since He is the way, the truth, and the life, everything we need to follow in order to enter Heaven is ultimately seen through Jesus' example.

So what do you strive for? Riches? Love?

Now we see that we should not expect human relationships to satisfy our innermost desires for love, for we have already been given that perfect love by Him. Now we see that instead of chasing riches on earth, we can find true treasure in Heaven. How has He given us His love? How can we find treasure in Heaven? Through Jesus; through His sacrifice, His life, and everything He is. Now, we can see that we truly have everything in Him. Without Him, everything—including ourselves—would he lost.

I strive to follow Jesus. We all should!
