MIRACLES

Life itself is a miracle from the moment we opened our eyes to see this vast world until we close them to hope for a new day. Miracle is a chance. A hope that despite some twists and turns in life and phenomena that is beyond our control, life goes on. Change is a miracle. It is a miracle to change something you are accustomed to, something you believed in, and to change something you know of like the back of your hands. Well, you see, to have Christ within us is a miracle, too! It is a miracle to have faith in fate.

The life story of St. Augustine of Hippo is a famous one when it comes to chronicles about a change of heart. He was not baptized although he was enrolled as a Catechumen. His mother was a Christian devout; hence he was introduced to Christianity. Later in his life, he started to study Pagan Literature in Madauros, which made a negative effect on his moral foundation. He then became an atheist. But what made him change his mind and convert back to his childhood religion? He lived a hedonistic life. He faced a number of challenges and temptations but later when he found friendship with Bishop Ambrose, his faith was renewed. He had broken with his evil past and abandoned his career in the world. He knew that this friendship was his miracle of change, a change to believe in God again.

In the same way, the inspiring life of the famous Nick Vujicic is a miracle. A person with no limbs yet lived his life fully with meaning. He was born with disabilities and grew up with bullies mocking his condition. There was even a time when he considered taking his own life because he questioned his existence. What was his life for with no hands and feet? It is almost impossible to do things he wanted. But living with it, he slowly realized his "disabilities" had actually heightened his ability to serve his purpose as a speaker and evangelist. He realized that li condition is a gift to inspire others and be an instrument in spreading God's word. did not let this restrain him from being the person he wanted to be.

Moreover, the devastating disaster in Yolanda where thousands of Filipinos had suffered is a story worth sharing. The survivors of the disaster are the living miracles, who believed and had faith that the storm was just a passing hurdle of life. Various stories of these survivors were witnesses of divine providence and how their faith had saved them. They understood that this miracle is their second chance in making things right and to be models of God's stewards for nature.

Similarly, the late Gina Lopez, who was a Filipino environmentalist and philanthropist whose mission in life was to serve humanity because it means serving God. It was her faith that moved her to give up her luxury in life, to live among the people in the slums of Africa and offered her selfless passion to serve. She came home to the Philippines with a goal to change the world. She was the woman behind Bantay Bata 163 whose goal was to protect the women and children. Not only that, but she also stood up for the environment and became the active Secretary of the Department Environment and Natural Resources. It was her faith that inspired her to fight for what she believes is right and to be a catalyst of change.

Another chronicle is about a woman with big dreams and whose heart for God alone, St. Candida Maria de Jesus. She is the founder of the Hijas de Jesus Congregation with Christ as the core. She was unlettered but that did not hinder her from going to the uttermost parts of the world in search for souls. With the help of Father Herranz, she founded a congregation whose very existence is to love Mary and Jesus and to be in loving service for the marginalized. It was her faith that moved her to fulfill God's will for her, that is to provide Christian education to young boys and girls.

All these stories are witnesses of Faith in Action. How faith became a miracle that changed them to be the beings they had been. Without their faith, St. Augustine would not probably be a saint now and he would not have his doctrines of the Church; Nick would have chosen to give up on his life; the Yolanda survivors would not have hoped to live another day; Gina Lopez could have chosen to fight for something else other than the welfare of women, children and the environment; and as for St. Candida, without her faith she could have chosen to marry the young wealthy man who had asked her hand in marriage and there wouldn't be any young Hijas and Hijos around the world.

Truly, miracles are opportunities to make lemonade out of the lemons life hurl at us. Change is a miracle that enables one look at life in another leaf. It is a miracle that both these chances and change lead people to believe in God. You see, all the aforementioned people have something in common and that is to believe and to have faith. They believed in what God has willed for them and trusted that everything they are and have is because of God. Just like you and I, we are breathing as miracle, this is a living proof of Christ. We live, love, and lead because of Him, and just in a snap of his finger, we could lose everything we have. Without Him, all the possibilities of living and the hope for love will cease to exist.
