THE THIRD INTERNATIONAL YOUTH ENCOUNTER

7:30 pm, November 6, 2021, Philippine Time - I joined a virtual meeting where my alma mater, Manresa School, has invited me to. Greetings in different languages welcomed me. Different faces from other countries in the world, all smiling in front of their screens waving hello, are what occupied the screen of my laptop. I was moved to see how one meeting zoom link that contains over 300 people from all over the world made communication and understanding possible. Not everyone knows how to speak English fluently, not everyone can understand Spanish, and simply not everyone speaks the same language. The International Encounter with the Youth event showed the beauty of diversity. Diversity inspires and encourages cultural growth and mutual understanding that enriches relationships in our society. Happiness radiated throughout the duration of the event. READ THE INTERNATIONAL YOUTH ENCOUNTER ON THE INTERNATIONAL WEBPAGE. CLICK THIS LINK HERE.

The highlight of my night was when we were broken into smaller groups called a “breakout room,” we were seven in the room. Three people spoke in English; three were Spanish and one Chinese. The first question given was, “What trait of Jesus do I live and transmit the most? How does Mother Candida help me to be a young Christian?”. To this, I remembered fragments of my answer saying that the trait of Jesus that I possess is to be as loving as possible. Loving branches out to different ways. Loving means being in service when needed, loving means generosity, loving means kindness, and so is a person who can love is a gift that Mother Candida has helped me learn through the holistic education that she has given me through Manresa School.

Language is indeed a principal medium of human communication. Differences in such can be a difficulty and a hindrance to common understanding, but having a community with the same beliefs and people who have the same goal, just like Jesus and Saint Candida Maria de Jesus, to be of service to those who need it and to love our neighbors, would help us navigate towards a brighter future. The world is indeed too small, as told by Saint Candida in one of her quotes, but our world still has souls who need more love and understanding, and so that is our most incredible mission: to be like them and to be a “Jesus” to our brothers and sisters in our modern-day.

“I would go to the ends of the earth in search for souls.”, is one of the many sayings of Saint Candida Maria de Jesus that no matter how many times I read, the meaning of the quote is still unclear for me. At first, I have interpreted that the many schools of the Congregation of Hijas de Jesus from all across the globe are the representation of the message from this sentence; although not wrong, I had the greatest opportunity to know and to understand what this quote of Mother Candida truly meant entirely during this Third International Encounter of the Youth.
