Accompaniment of the Young: The Art and Skills of Listening

The role of Catholic educators is essential in the lives of young people. They need to listen and accompany the youth. The Christus Vivit document sums up the kind of listening that Catholic educators and formators ought to aim for in the ministry with the young people. It says that the young people must sense that the one who is accompanying them is listening well.

Moreover, listening and accompanying young people entail skills on the part of the educators. For this reason, the Formation Committee of the Team on Educative Action organized a seminar on “Accompaniment of the Young: The Art and Skills of Listening”. It was conducted last August 20, 2022, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. via Zoom, with Sr. Felisa Molina, F.I. as speaker. The seminar specifically aimed to provide a deepening session on Accompaniment and to develop knowledge and skills in active listening. It was participated in by the pastoral ministers, administrators, teachers, and staff of all Hijas de Jesus schools in the Philippines, and F.I. sisters from Bangladesh.

Sr. Felisa Molina, F.I. emphasized the different stages of listening and the challenges in each stage. She also gave a mini workshop to all participants in a breakout session. During the open forum, many asked questions and several participants shared their ideas and experiences. It was a fruitful seminar for all the participants.  They were all grateful to Sr. Felisa for sharing her expertise and experiences on active listening, and for the deeper knowledge and skills that they gained from the seminar.

Finally, Sr. Joji Solorio, F.I., RCA of Manresa School and a member of the Formation Committee, expressed her words of gratitude to the speaker, Sr. Felisa Molina, F.I., and to all the participants for their active participation. The seminar ended with a prayer led by Sr. Lory Losbañes, F.I. of Bangladesh.
