Matthew 5:20-26 *2017*

“I TELL YOU, UNLESS YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS SURPASSES THAT OF THE SCRIBES AND PHARISEES, YOU WILL NOT ENTER THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN.”

We always hear the advertisement this warning: “smoking is dangerous to your health.”

Jesus warns the disciples how to take care of their spiritual health: to surpass the righteousness of the scribes and the Pharisess.

Jesus knows that the scribes and the Pharisees desire to live rightly in order to enter heaven. They even make laws in order to fulfill the commandments of God. Surely they are afraid of the fires of hell.

Jesus is more concerned with practicing than teaching. The scribes and the Pharisees teach the law but without love. Thus they sin. If cigarette smoking is dangerous to one’s health, sin is dangerous to one’s spiritual well-being.

If they say, “to quit smoking is difficult, but it is possible.” Same as sin, “to quit sinning is difficult, but possible.”

To quit smoking reminds people to quit sinning. In hell, there’s not only smoke but also fire.

A fire accompanied by smoke could lead to destruction and damnation.

However, there is also fire that comes from the Holy Spirit which bring salvation- faith!

Light the FIRE from the Holy Spirit, not from the cigarette.
