THE WAY OF TRANSFIGURATION

Here is a third way suggested by Pope Francis for the Missionary Church to be effective in the process for the transformation of the world. : ‘The way of Transfiguration’.

To learn how to practice this way, the Pope says, we look at Jesus. In his daily encounters with people and in his concern for the world, Jesus never left things and people the way He found them. He always transfigured everything, leaving us with the truth He is the one who has the power to do so. As we let Him transfigure us, He enables us to transfigure others too, by capturing and proclaiming the dignity of every person in front of us, especially when that person is poor or downcast.

There is a beautiful episode in the life of the great artist Michelangelo. One day a friend of his had been looking for him for several hours. When he was about to give up, late in the afternoon, he thought to go to a quarry, confident he was going to find the artist there. Yes there he was looking intently at a huge block of marble. His friend had the impression he was in contemplation and was afraid to disturb him. Then he took courage, greeted him and asked what he was doing. Michelangelo looked at his friend and told him: “You see? In that huge block of marble there is a hidden angel and I want to bring it out.” He worked so hard and with such a religious attitude, that the angel he sculptured out of that huge block of marble, has been considered the most beautiful among the many angels he was able to create.

The Lord enables us to see the dignity present in every person, no matter how low the person is, so that the person may become aware of it and live according to that dignity, fruit of God’s love. He also enables us to see His loving relationship with the whole world as He shows himself present throughout creation by his universal Lordship. In the Encyclical Letter ‘Laudato Si’ of Pope Francis, the whole section VII of chapter two, makes us understand that, without any doubt, we can transfigure all people and things considering them important in God’s eyes.

A particular point presented by Pope Francis several times, regards his invitation to transfigure even the problems of life by considering them not as obstacles, but as challenges to live with faith and enthusiasm. Mary was able to transfigure even her sufferings making them redemptive thanks to her communion with Jesus.

What should encourage us to be living instruments of transfiguration in God’s hands is the certainty that one day the transfiguration of the whole creation will be brought to perfection in the heavenly Jerusalem “where God lives among men; they shall be his people, and He will be their God ….. He will wipe away all tears from their eyes; there will be no more death, and no more mourning or sadness. The world of the past has gone” (Rev 21:3-4).
