Pearl 3: “to give thanks to Jesus”

In Letter No. 3, Mother Foundress wrote that she had just received a letter from Fr. Herranz, which gave her much consolation, that even before reading it, she went to the chapel to “dar gracias a Jesus.” [give thanks to Jesus].

We often say that gratitude is the memory of the heart. For Ignatius, the one big “sin” [not to be taken literally] is ingratitude…when we fail to see all the good things God has done for us.

Antonio Grau in his reflection writes: “To give thanks”, to be grateful for everything we receive. For everything, not only for what is good and beautiful but for everything. Giving thanks is a sign of good heart and above all to recognize that someone thinks and cares about you.

Reflection questions:

$        In what occasions do I usually give thanks? In what instances do I take things for granted? Is saying “thank you” a habit of mine? Is it easy for me, or do I find difficulty in saying it?

·         It is difficult to see the hand of God in stressful situations. But do you think this phrase of Mother Candida – “Blessed be God who loves us so dearly” can serve as a daily reminder and exercise in expressing gratitude?

·         Has this reflection opened our hearts and minds to people and situations we have neglected to be grateful for?
