SMAD Ash Wednesday 2021: Packets of Ashes

1.SmadAsh     Ash Wednesday is the start of the Catholic penitential season of Lent, when Catholics are expected to pray, fast, and give alms for a period of 40 days, leading to the celebration of Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection during Holy Week and Easter.

Normally the imposition of ashes takes place during Mass, after the Homily, but because of the pandemic, a new measure contained in the guidelines from the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines was initiated. In SMAD, the blessing and distribution of ashes happened during the celebration of the Word of God during the Morning Prayer. The whole educative community gathered in prayer, reflecting on the direct call of God to follow Him, by turning away from sin, and doing what he says. This year’s ashes were obtained from dried branches of palm trees prepared by the Pastoral team a day before the celebration

Mindful of the need to safeguard the health of everyone in the school, each member of the community was given small paper packets designed with a purple cross containing “blessed ashes” that they can personally apply by tracing the cross on their forehead after a silent prayer in the school chapel.

Indeed it was a very solemn celebration. The Coronavirus pandemic brings a new look to Ash Wednesday in SMAD, but the message remains the same.
