DSCN0834 - CopyThe parish of Utrail, “Mary Our Help” was blessed by the visit of His Eminence George Cardinal Alencherry last May 1 to 3, 2013. He is Major Archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly Diocese and head of Syro-Malabar Catholic Church in Kerala, India. He came with his chancellor, Fr. Antony Kollanur.

On May 1, 2013, the Feast of St. Joseph the worker, the Cardinal blessed and laid the Foundation stone of the future “Mary our Help” Shrine in Utrail, and he was assisted by Bishop Ponen Paul Kubi, CSC, of Mymensingh Diocese. Fr. Francis, Alencherry with Fr. Powell, both Salesians of Don Bosco, and Fr. Alfonso, SX, concelebrated in the mass.

Almost all the people from the different villages came to witness the significant event in Utrail parish. After the Eucharistic celebration, a simple cultural program vibrating the Garo culture of the people in Utrail, Birisiri was presented. The presence of the Cardinal among the Garos that day brought them an opportunity to reflect on their Faith which the missionaries have imparted to them from the beginning.

The Cardinal has also reserved a time to visit our girls of the St. Candida Hostel Girls. A simple cultural program was also presented by our girls in his honor. Since the Cardinal cannot speak and understand Bangla, the girls tried their best to speak in English which the Cardinal enjoyed immensely. In his inspirational talk, He encouraged our girls to pray and study well, but of course, he told them to eat, play and sleep well. The girls were so impressed by the Cardinal’s visit, since it is their first time to see and talk with a Cardinal.

For some days, the Cardinal has also seen some realities of our villages in Utrail. He thanked all of us, especially the sisters, for our collaboration in the parish. For him, we belong to one big family here, with the Hostel boys, Hostel girls, Ladies Hostel girls, the Don Bosco seminarians and the parishioners. Blessed be God for everything.
