A Brief History of Tahanan Candida Maria de Jesus

Quezon City

The name Tahanan Cándida María de Jesús expresses both the nature and the purpose of this community. Tahanan means “home”—a place where the sisters can live with dignity, care, and a sense of belonging. It also recalls one of the most cherished qualities of Saint Cándida María de Jesús, who showed particular concern and loving care for sick and dying sisters.

The Hijas de Jesús, a Congregation of Spanish origin, arrived in the Philippines on June 27, 1932, and established its first foundation in Pototan, Iloilo. As the Congregation grew and communities multiplied throughout Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, the number of sisters also increased, including sisters who, because of age or health, needed special care and a lifestyle suited to their condition.

Recognizing this need, Sr. Lina Cornelio, Provincial Superior, initiated the construction of a special residence within the compound of Manresa Retreat House. Construction began in 1993 and was completed in 1996. The house was inaugurated on May 31, 1996, the birthday of Saint Cándida María de Jesús, whose name it bears. On that occasion, the new community was formally entrusted to its first Superior, Sr. Cecilia Solis, F.I., and Tahanan began its independent life as a home for elderly and sick sisters.

Over the years, Tahanan expanded its services. It became not only a permanent home for elderly and infirm sisters but also a place of welcome for sisters from other communities who needed medical treatment, surgery, recovery, or temporary care. Additional rooms were made available, and the kitchen and refectory were enlarged to respond to the growing needs of the community.

A major renovation and remodeling project began in September 2021, particularly on the second floor. Roofs and ceilings were renewed, additional bathrooms were installed, rooms were renovated, and a terrace was added as a space for recreation, sharing, and personal activities.

On January 1, 2022, Tahanan was further strengthened through the presence of the St. Camillus Medhaven staff, composed of nurses and caregivers who provide professional care to the sisters. An activity coordinator also facilitates exercises and activities that promote the sisters’ physical, intellectual, social, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Regular medical care and monitoring are likewise provided.

The principal apostolate of the Tahanan community is the apostolate of prayer. The sisters, in their own way and according to their capacity, continue to participate in the mission of the Church. Those who are able engage in catechesis for children and women who come to Manresa on Sundays, serve in the Legion of Mary, participate in family ministry, and bring Holy Communion to the sick and elderly in the neighborhood.

Thus, Tahanan Cándida María de Jesús is more than a residence for elderly and sick sisters. It is a home of care, prayer, presence, and loving service, where the sisters continue to live their vocation and contribute to the mission of the Congregation according to their strength and circumstances. In its quiet and often hidden apostolate, Tahanan continues to embody the compassionate spirit of Saint Cándida María de Jesús.
