“Let us go to Bethlehem.” : A Christmas-New Year Gathering of Religious Men and Women, Ruteng, Indonesia

On Saturday, January 4, 2025, the religious men and women of the Diocese of Ruteng embarked on a heartwarming journey to Bethlehem—not geographically, but spiritually. The theme, “Let us go to Bethlehem,” resonated deeply throughout the gathering, bringing together priests, brothers, seminarians, and sisters in a celebration of faith, fellowship, and the joyous season.

The event began with a solemn Mass, officiated by the Provincial Superior of the SVD, Fr. Paulus Tolo. In his homily, he reflected on the theme, emphasizing the humility and simplicity of Bethlehem, the chosen place for the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. He compared this to how God continues to choose religious men and women—unworthy, humble sinners—to become His instruments in the world.

The sacred atmosphere filled St. Michael Church in Kumba, uniting everyone in prayer and reflection on the true meaning of Christmas: the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem.

Following the Mass, the spirit of celebration continued with vibrant presentations from various congregations. Approximately 400 people participated in the event. The Hijas de Jesus sisters, along with aspirants and one junior sister, also contributed to the program with a presentation. They joyfully joined the community in dancing to the rhythms of diverse cultural expressions from different parts of Indonesia, particularly from Ruteng. These presentations created an atmosphere of joy and engagement, showcasing the richness of shared faith and culture.

The celebration extended into a festive lunch shared by the different congregations of men and women. It was a meaningful opportunity for fellowship, conversation, and shared joy. As food and laughter were exchanged, a profound sense of community and unity permeated the gathering.

The “Journey to Bethlehem” was more than just an event; it was a reaffirmation of shared faith and a strengthening of communal bonds. The presence of priests, sisters, seminarians, aspirants, postulants, novices, and juniors from various congregations added a layer of spiritual depth, enriching the experience for all involved.

This gathering served as a powerful reminder of the true meaning of Christmas and the hope that the New Year brings. It was truly a memorable occasion, one that will be cherished for years to come.
