In the Footsteps of Mother Cándida (Burgos and Valladolid)

The Pilgrimage Continues to Burgos

The pilgrimage continued to Burgos, where the Junior Sisters were able to follow in Mother Cándida’s footsteps along her journey of seeking and discerning God’s will.

On September 20, the Junior Sisters arrived in Burgos and were warmly welcomed by the sisters of the community. During the afternoon, they had the opportunity to get to know one another, share, and enjoy each other’s presence. It was a simple yet meaningful encounter that allowed them to experience once again the spirit of fraternity that flows from belonging to the same charismatic family.

September 21 was a particularly rich and meaningful day. One of the places they visited was the Parish of San Lesmes, where Mother Cándida and Doña Hermitas Sabater used to participate in the daily celebration of the Eucharist. They also visited the place where the Sabater family lived, on San Juan Street.

The Sabater family played an important role in Mother Cándida’s life during those years of waiting and discernment. They welcomed and cared for her and offered her a place where she could work while she patiently and trustingly awaited God’s confirmation of the path to which she was being called.

In addition to these significant places, the Junior Sisters visited other nearby parishes that Mother Cándida may have frequented or where she may have participated in the Eucharist. They also had the opportunity to appreciate the richness of Gothic art in the city’s many churches, particularly the Cathedral of Burgos and the Chapel of the Santo Cristo, where Mother Cándida herself would often go to pray. They were deeply moved by the beauty of these places, which form part of the history of their Foundress.

These brief days in Burgos allowed the Junior Sisters to contemplate more deeply Mother Cándida’s patience, perseverance, and determination in seeking God’s will. She knew how to wait for God’s time, trusting that He would show her the way.

Burgos, therefore, holds a special place in the story of her vocation. There, in the midst of a city marked by numerous churches and accompanied by a family that welcomed and cared for her, Mother Cándida continued to nourish her faith and prepare her heart to receive the plan that God had for her.

Throughout these visits, the Junior Sisters were lovingly accompanied by Sisters Inmaculada, Mercedes, Isabel, and Ma. Jesusa, who helped them discover and better understand the places connected with Mother Cándida’s life.

Another gift of this experience was the encounter with the sisters of the community. The Junior Sisters are deeply grateful for the warm welcome, closeness, and many gestures of affection they received. Although the time they shared was brief, it was enough to experience the fraternity and warmth of those who belong to this great family of the Daughters of Jesus.
